First off: Why the name RENEW Haiti? RENEW stands for: Really Excited Nurse Elida Walton.
Really Excited - because that's what I am, a lot of the time, and especially when on sugar ;)
Nurse - because by His grace and faithfulness this is who I am.
Elida Walton - because this is my name.
Haiti - because this is my country of service.
Secondly: A bit about ministry:
Lord willing I will be working in the Bethesda Medical Center in Haiti by August 2012. I will be serving with One Mission Society. I am currently funding for career status and am 40.5% funded! I have just returned from an amazing two and a half week funding trip to GA and FL with my missionary 'aunt' Valeene who is more like the Energizer Bunny than anyone I know - she organized all of this, drove the whole way there and back and all around, and continues to go, go, go - it astonishes me to think that she is almost 81 years of age!
Thirdly: A bit about me - without sounding too narcissistic :D
I was born into a Christian home and accepted Jesus as my personal Saviour on February 15th 1992. I am an MK - missionary kid, and a TCK - third culture kid. My mom is American and my dad British - sometimes I am just confused. Our first term as missionaries was to Haiti with what was then called OMS International - my dad served as Field Treasurer and my mom as Hostess/Bethesda Medical Center Help/School Choir and Play Director, etc. Our time in Haiti was just 3.5 years. I was eight when we came and twelve when we left. Our second term was to the OMS Manchester office in the UK. Public high school was hard but God began to work in my heart even then to bring about His calling in my life. I swore I would never be a missionary. Then one day at a WYnet sponsored youth retreat I knew that I needed to surrender to His will for my life. Fast-forward a year or two I did my college "research", prayed about this life changing decision and Pensacola Christian College BSN was for me. I started in 2004 (a year early for my age) and expected to graduate in 2008. God's plans are not ours and His ways are higher. Though I failed three classes in college and it took me six years to do it, on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 I graduated with a Bachelor's in Science and Nursing!
Backtrack: In 2007 I returned to Haiti for a two month medical missions trip - working at Bethesda Medical Center. Then in 2009 I was part of a team that did medical missions in Cote d'Ivoire. I had enjoyed my time in Haiti and Cote d'Ivoire - both countries are very similar in language, culture, and people. But I realized my heart was in Haiti. I prayed: "Lord if You want to send me back I am willing to go." It wasn't until my last semester at PCC, when a missionary from Papau New Guinea - Matt Allen spoke that I changed my prayer. Up until that point it had been: "Lord, can I go? Go back to Haiti and work at Bethesda Medical Center?" It was at that very moment that His voice said so clearly and with such command that I am awestruck to this day: "Go"! Immediately a sense of peace and power seemed to flow through me!
I have been candidating with One Mission Society (which was OMS International) since June 2010. I am currently praying for an August 2012 arrival in Haiti.
